A wonderful concert, dreamlike and sensual, the powerful emotion of the tracks of Taken by the Dream, new disk of Fatalists, are “poetry that rings as the hammer upon the anvil, that bites heart, that twit like a bird song” (recalling a description made by Alan Lomax when talking about the songs of 22, a prisoner of Parchman, Mississipi, 1959).

The concert has taken place at Progresso Club, Florence may 2019.

Hugo Race Fatalists

The songs have been performed with power, improvisation, tension, taking care to the current sensations on stage (the playlists contained many possibilities of songs, to be chosen on the very moment). Interpretation and improvisation are an artistic main quality.

They face necessity to create while reproducing, a way to play music listening to emotions (avoiding to empty the meaning of the songs, which may happen while taking care only to execution).

The musicians are actually really talented.
Hugo Race, soul of the band, is original, poetic and tribal together. Some tracks sound echoes of True Spirit band. His is a musician that expresses himself in an eclectic and experimental way. I like a lot the mysterious electronic beginning of Gonna Get High song. Interweaving of poetry, music and life, wholly genuine, makes him an artist of great depth and substance.

Diego Sapignoli impress his drums with swishes, light echoes of percussions, skillfully blended with fast rhythm of chamber and kettledrums. The touch style sometimes reminds the Dirty Three, to which he adds intensity and explosion. The tidy bass guitar of Francesco Giampaoli is essential, compact with drums. Giovanni Ferrario guitar is exceptional for its refinement and common understanding with Hugo Race’s one.

This has been an outstanding concert for its harmony and intensity. Smoking Gun is my favorite track, whole disk is a masterpiece. Musicians where glad, in fine feather, and their performance has let warmth in me, a sweet sensation of poetry and marvel.
